It’s a way to become an unique band in the middle of this great musical tsunami we see on last times. Besides there are complainers that are getting heavy on our nerves (especially in Brazil, with this fashion called “old school Metal”, creating Dolly clones that think they are the real thing in terms of Metal), it’s a very good thing, a breath of fresh air that blows the mold and dust away. And Spain, a land of very good bands, shows its face again with AS LIGHT DIES, that releases their new EP, “Gea”. To be honest and straight, their musical work can be described as a fusion of Doom Death Metal/Doom Gothic (I do not believe in the so called label Gothic Metal, but I use it only as a reference for you, dear readers) bands like MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, andTHEATRE OF TRAGEDY in their most elegant, introspective and extreme times with a musical technique that gets near of something DREAM THEATER did on “Images and Words” times (when they were more interested in creating good songs than individual technical exhibitions). 9th As Light Dies ‪#‎geaep2015‬ review (Dutchdistortion, Neatherlands) http://www.dutchdistortion.nl/2015/08/as-light-dies-gea Gea is niet nieuw – het werd voor de eerste maal opgenomen in 2006 en voor zover ik weet nooit uitgebracht. Ondertussen heeft As Light Dies al drie volwaardige platen uitgebracht, waarbij The Love Album van vorig jaar waarschijnlijk het bekendst is. Waarom deze EP, wel, dat ik het ook niet met zekerheid kan zeggen. Misschien als een extraatje voor de mensen die willen weten hoe hun geluid ontwikkelde, misschien omdat de opnames ergens lagen te verstoffen en de band dat toch een beetje zonde vond. Groot probleem: ik kende As Light Dies niet voordien en dus komt deze EP als een volslagen onbekende binnen. Deze groep Spanjaarden schijnt bekend te zijn als een avant-gardistische band, wat als je het eens objectief bekijkt niks anders betekent dan dat zij black-metal spelen, zij het met toevoegingen die het een intellectueel of alleszins ‘anders’ tintje geven, waarbij je erg goed in je achterhoofd moet houden dat ‘avant-garde’ zowel positief als negatief kan uitslaan. Dat daargelaten, wat vertelt de muziek ons? We trappen af met Terra, wat een instrumentaal stuk is dat aan de ene kant best te pruimen is maar anderzijds ook vrij nietszeggend – het is duidelijk bedoeld om de EP van een sfeervolle intro te voorzien maar klinkt een beetje als iets wat Tiamat tijdens de opnames vanWildhoney op de kniptafel heeft laten liggen. Black? Niet echt, nee; origineel, ook niet bijzonder… sfeervol, dat wel. AS LIGHT DIES haben „Gea“ bereits vor ihrem Vollzeitdebüt auf den Markt gebracht. Erstaunlich ist, dass diese Band bereits vor neun Jahren Mut zu relativ gewagten, musikalischen Ideen besaß. Fans der Band, oder Freunde des progressiven Black Metals und des alten Doom/Gothic Metals der Marke früherer ANATHEMA sollten auf jeden Fall ein Ohr riskieren.

As Light Dies comes to increase the quarry of Spanish bands that, within the land ends, make that we can boast of having good scene. Although its history is already long. A Step Through the Reflection is the culmination in the form of debut of long duration, becoming one of the groups to take into account in the future.
